Friendship Through the Glass

She was small in a world too big, lost between cages and crowds, The noise of the zoo swelled until she tipped into tears. Her hands curled into fists, her breath caught and shaky, and for a moment she was alone. Then, a movement. On the other side of the glass, a monkey tilted his head, eyes bright with curiosity. He tapped. Paused. Tapped again. She looked up. The tears slowed, confused, as he pulled a face so silly it startled a laugh from her chest a sound she didn’t know she still had. She jabbered. He jabbered back. Two strangers speaking the oldest language there is: I see you. The glass did not matter. The species did not matter. What mattered was this in the middle of fear, something reached out and said, You’re not alone. Laughter replaced crying. Connection replaced panic. And in that brief exchange, love arrived without words, without promises, without needing to stay. Because sometimes friendship isn’t forever, it’s just long enough to remind a heart, it is worthy of comfort. And sometimes, feeling loved is not about who we are, but about being noticed when we need it most.
